The morels that live in our woods and in our wooded watersheds are one of the most amazing, diverse and unique mammals on earth. I get to see them when I’m out hiking and camping in the woods near my home in Maryland. They are a very special animal with a unique biology and diet. I’ve even seen a few in Louisiana.
The morel is a very beautiful, slow-moving, mostly nocturnal, ground-dwelling “beast.” Ive visited many morel haunts in New England including New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New York, and Illinois and have even had them on my favorite food-eating trip to Georgia. The morels are the most commonly hunted creature in the world, and they come in a number of different colors and tastes.
For years I’ve been a fan of the morel, but recently I’ve been becoming more of a fan of the morel as a species. Morel in general are the rarest of species, and they are not a particularly popular pet, so you almost never see them unless you are on a morel hunt.
